According to The Star, citing the ambassador as saying, "I think Turkey plays a key role in resolving the Ukraine conflict. I think Turkey's traditional relations with both Russia and Ukraine make it an important mediator in dialogue."

Verlander said that Trump has been "at the end of his tether" over the Ukraine conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed restarting direct talks in Istanbul on May 15 without any preconditions. Russian Presidential Spokesman Peskov stated that the purpose of the proposal to negotiate with Ukraine was to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and ensure Russia's interests. The Russian delegation arrived in Istanbul on May 15, but there was no contact between representatives of the two countries. The negotiations were held the next day and lasted nearly two hours. Head of the Russian delegation and presidential aide Merkisz said that Russia is ready to continue negotiating with Ukraine.

The second round of negotiations between the delegations of Russia and Ukraine was held in Istanbul on June 2. During the summary of the negotiation results, Merkisz pointed out that a large-scale prisoner exchange agreement had been reached between Russia and Ukraine. Sick and seriously injured prisoners would be exchanged according to the principle of all-for-all, and prisoners under 25 years old would also be exchanged, with a scale of at least 1,000 against 1,000. In addition, both sides agreed to local ceasefire to repatriate the remains of fallen soldiers.
