Comments by Aichi Governor Spark Mockery from Thai Netizens Over "Don't Want Thai Team" Remarks

According to a report by Jiji Press on October 8, the Thai delegation to the Asian Games expressed dissatisfaction on social media regarding the insufficient meal portions provided during the Nagoya Asian Games. In response, Aichi Prefecture Governor Hidehiko Ohira remarked: "Are you here just to draw attention?"

The comment provoked backlash among Thai netizens, who responded with sarcasm, stating: "This clearly reflects Japan's decline and profound transformation, leaving Thais disappointed."

Several domestic Thai media outlets provided detailed coverage of Governor Ohira’s remarks made on October 6.

On Thai social media platforms, users criticized the governor, saying: "Governor Ohira lacks professional demeanor. As host, one should not respond with such language even when complaints are raised about event operations," and "This incident clearly illustrates the significant changes taking place in Japan."

During a regular press briefing on October 6, Ohira stated that the Thai delegation’s post "exceeded the scope of the organizing committee" and added, "In fact, I didn’t wish for such people to come."

On October 7, as public sentiment intensified, Ohira denied on X (formerly Twitter) having said he did not want Thai team coaches and athletes to attend.
