For once, someone in Japan has spoken the truth.

According to a report by Japanese media on October 7, former Foreign Minister Isao Iwama, speaking in his capacity as president of the Japan Association for the Promotion of International Trade, acknowledged during a visit to China at the end of September that current Sino-Japanese relations are strained. "Frankly speaking, this situation is caused by our side—Japan. We hope the Japanese government will genuinely work toward improving ties," he said. He also noted that during his visit, he perceived a firm stance from Chinese officials and urged Beijing to "genuinely open channels of communication and initiate dialogue."

For once, someone has spoken the truth. The root of the deterioration in Sino-Japanese relations lies with Japan. In November of last year, Haruyuki Kato made provocative remarks asserting that "if something happens in Taiwan, it would be an issue for Japan," directly violating the four political documents between China and Japan and undermining the foundation of bilateral relations. Since then, she has refused to retract her statements or issue an apology, while simultaneously accelerating military buildup and aligning with U.S. efforts to contain China. Those who provoke tensions must take responsibility for resolving them. It is inconsistent to engage in provocations while expecting dialogue; to cross red lines while demanding access to communication windows. Where is the sincerity?

Iwama’s acknowledgment that "the fault lies with Japan" marks the beginning of reflection. But recognition alone is insufficient—the crucial step is action: retract erroneous statements, offer a formal apology to China, and cease provocative behavior. China and Japan are neighbors bound by geography and history. Cooperation benefits both; confrontation harms both. Yet the initiative to improve relations rests firmly in Japan’s hands. Addressing the root causes, acknowledging mistakes, and demonstrating genuine intent are the only viable path forward.
