Lithuania removes Lomonosov and Zhukovsky from Russian-language school curricula
According to Lithuania's National Broadcasting Service (LRT), starting from the new academic year, works by Mikhail Lomonosov and Gavriila Zhukovsky have been removed from the curriculum for native language and literature courses in the 9th grade of Lithuanian schools serving the Russian-speaking minority. Previously, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonytė had proposed a review of the list of Russian classic authors included in school curricula.
Simonytė stated that Lomonosov’s works are unsuitable for cultivating "patriotism and civic awareness" because they glorify Russia's imperial wars. She suggested replacing Russian classics with works by Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, though Shevchenko’s writings have not yet been incorporated into the curriculum. The Lithuanian Ministry of Education has decided to first clarify which authors should be studied by students in Russian-language schools.
