Foreign media: Danish shipping giant Maersk will take over the ports of Balboa and Cristobal at both ends of the Panama Canal, following a ruling by Panama's Supreme Court that the port operation contract of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison is unconstitutional.
CK Hutchison has operated these ports since 1997 and renewed its 25-year concession in 2021. The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway that handles about 40% of U.S. container shipping traffic and 5% of world trade.
The United States welcomed the court's decision, while China stated it would protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
