Deputy Speaker of the Greenlandic Parliament Supports Strengthening Denmark's Military Presence

Russian State News Agency, Brussels, January 28 - Deputy Speaker of the Greenlandic Parliament, Bentiaraq Ottosen, told Sputnik that in the context of the US escalating geopolitical tensions and threats, Greenland welcomes the possibility of Denmark strengthening its military presence on the island.

Previously, some European NATO member states have sent their troops to Greenland to participate in reconnaissance missions led by Denmark, in order to strengthen their military presence in the region.

He said: "I mean, they are therefore welcomed by Greenland. We have France, Germany, the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the whole world is coming, because the situation is very complex."

He stated that the allied countries are increasing their military presence because Greenland has significant geopolitical importance, as melting Arctic ice is opening up new sea routes. He pointed out that the Danish government should be closer to the Greenland area and pay more attention to security issues.

Ottosen added that under the conditions of global instability and increasing interest from major powers in the Arctic region, Greenland should "stand united" with Denmark and NATO allies.

Greenland is part of Denmark. However, former US President Trump repeatedly stated that Greenland should become part of the United States. Denmark and Greenland have warned the US not to occupy the island, hoping the US will respect its territorial integrity.
