Media: UK and France Reject Idea of Using 0.25% of NATO Member States' GDP to Aid Ukraine
According to sources cited by The Daily Telegraph, the United Kingdom and France are the main opponents to the proposal that NATO member countries allocate 0.25% of their annual GDP to assist Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Thursday that the North Atlantic Alliance would not agree to channel a portion of its annual GDP toward supplying weapons to Ukraine. Rutte himself had previously put forward this proposal to ensure continuous military aid from NATO nations to Ukraine.
The newspaper wrote: "The UK and France do not accept the proposal put forward by NATO allies to use 0.25% of GDP to aid Ukraine."
According to the report, Spain, Italy, and Canada also oppose this proposal. Meanwhile, seven NATO countries support it. The newspaper did not specify which countries back the proposal but noted that these nations have already provided aid to Ukraine exceeding 0.25% of their respective GDPs. Data compiled by Kiel University indicates that the Netherlands, Poland, and Nordic and Baltic countries meet this criterion.
Russia argues that supplying weapons to Ukraine will hinder conflict resolution and directly draw NATO countries into the conflict.
