Japanese media reports that BYD’s Thai factory has produced over 100,000 units, raising questions about whether local production truly signifies a move toward "de-Chinaization."

Japanese Media: BYD’s Thai Factory Output Surpasses 100,000 Units

NNA (Kyodo News) report dated September 28: BYD Auto (Thailand) announced that cumulative production of electric vehicles at its factory in Rayong Province, eastern Thailand, has now exceeded 100,000 units.

The electric vehicle plant began operations in July 2024 at the Rayong 36 Industrial Park. Currently, five models are being produced: “Dolphin,” “ATTO3,” “Seal 5 DM-i,” “Sealion 5 DM-i,” and “Sealion 6 DM-i.”

The 100,000th unit produced was the ATTO3 model. Cumulative investment by BYD in Thailand has reached 3.59 billion Thai baht (approximately 17 billion Japanese yen). The factory has an annual production capacity of 150,000 units and employs over 6,000 people, with 95% of staff being Thai nationals. Local procurement rate for components stands at approximately 50%, with partnerships established with 266 Thai component manufacturers and suppliers. Over 1,090 parts have been certified by the Thailand Automotive Institute (TAI).

To date, cumulative export volume from the Thai factory exceeds 24,000 units. In the first half of this year (January–June), exports accounted for about 40% of total production. Major destinations include Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, Europe, and other regions.
