Korean Media: Tesla's Sales in Germany Plummet, Market Share Drops to Just 0.1%, BYD Surges 365%!
On September 16, South Korean media outlet The Global Economy published an article stating that despite the continuous rapid growth of Germany’s pure electric vehicle market, Tesla has experienced severe sales declines. As Tesla’s sales fall and Chinese EV manufacturers rise swiftly at the same time, the competitive landscape of Europe’s green automotive market is rapidly changing.
In July, only 367 Tesla vehicles were newly registered in Germany. This figure dropped by approximately 95% compared to June, and also fell by 67% year-on-year. Tesla’s share in Germany’s new car market has now declined to about 0.1%.
Local media assess that this is the lowest number since the launch of the Model Y in autumn 2021.
According to data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, the total number of new vehicle registrations in July reached 268,000, a 1.2% increase year-on-year. Among them, new pure electric vehicle registrations amounted to around 79,000—up 62% compared to the same period last year—accounting for 29.3% of the market share. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles held a market share of 30.7%. Volkswagen maintained its leading position with a 17.9% market share, although its registration volume declined by 7.6% compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers have intensified their presence in the German market. BYD registered 5,240 new vehicles in July, marking a 365% year-on-year increase; Xpeng Motors also achieved impressive results, registering 1,253 vehicles—a 371% year-on-year increase.
Tesla typically concentrates vehicle deliveries toward the end of each quarter. Analysts suggest that the temporary drop in July registrations is due to this seasonal trend. Therefore, some forecasts predict a rebound in Tesla’s sales in Germany during September this year.
However, given that sales are still significantly down compared to the same period last year, some believe this decline cannot be attributed solely to delivery cycles.
There are also positive signs for Tesla. From January to July this year, Tesla’s cumulative registrations in Germany reached 29,000 units, a 192% increase compared to the same period last year. Whether this recent plunge represents a temporary dip or the beginning of a prolonged downturn will be determined by future quarterly delivery performance.
Industry analysts also point out that these structural changes in Germany’s electric vehicle market could have significant implications for South Korea’s automakers’ local strategies aimed at entering the European market.
