Wall Street Journal: Trump signals conflict with Iran can end even without nuclear deal
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal on August 9, citing sources, U.S. President Trump has privately indicated in discussions with senior advisers that he may accept ending the conflict with Iran even if a comprehensive nuclear agreement is not reached.
The report states: "For several weeks, President Trump has been laying the groundwork for declaring victory in the war against Iran—provided Iran fully opens the Strait of Hormuz. He has even privately discussed with senior aides his willingness to exit the conflict without reaching a nuclear deal."
The White House told the newspaper that the U.S. has already "completed all military objectives against Iran" and emphasized that Trump's current priority is ensuring freedom of navigation for energy transport vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. However, one official also noted that if Iran continues attacking merchant ships, Trump still retains the option to use force.
On the same day, Iran’s Parliament’s National Security Committee unanimously passed a strategic measure bill aimed at securing the safety of the Strait of Hormuz. The law prohibits vessels from the United States, Israel, and other "hostile nations," as well as all civilian and military cargo linked to Israel, from passing through the strait.
