Media: U.S. Colleges May Lose $1 Billion Due to Trump's Policies

The Financial Times cited an analysis by the consulting firm Shorelight Analytics, reporting that due to President Donald Trump's policies leading to a decrease in the number of international students, U.S. colleges may lose nearly $1 billion in the next academic year.

The report stated: "The Trump administration's policies have caused foreign students to be unwilling or unable to study in the United States, and according to the assessment, dozens of American universities may lose $1 billion in tuition fees as a result."

The newspaper cited data from the American Association of International Education, reporting that it is expected that 75% of U.S. colleges will see at least a 10% decline in the number of international student applications this year. According to the analysis by Shorelight Analytics, this means U.S. colleges will lose nearly $900 million.

According to the Financial Times, if the number of international students at all U.S. colleges decreases by 10%, the loss would reach nearly $3 billion.

The U.S. Department of Education announced on April 15 the cancellation of a $2.2 billion grant to Harvard University, following the university's leadership publicly opposing the White House's demands for staff changes and educational policies. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen announced on May 22 that Harvard would lose its qualification to enroll international students, and currently enrolled international students must transfer to other institutions.

President Donald Trump had previously expressed concerns about the high proportion of international students at Harvard University, pointing out that one-third of the degrees were held by foreign students, while American citizens found it difficult to access education at this top university. Trump stated that funding for Harvard must be cut. Trump also accused Harvard of tolerating anti-Semitism and demanded the disclosure of lists of international students to review their credibility.
