Foreign Media: China's solar power installed capacity exceeded coal power for the first time by the end of July, becoming the largest source of power generation capacity nationwide.
According to data from energy management authorities, China's solar power capacity reached 128.8 gigawatts, slightly higher than coal power's 128.5 gigawatts. However, due to the influence of weather and day-night cycles, the actual power output from solar remains significantly lower than that from coal power.
In the first half of the year, wind and solar power combined accounted for 24.6% of China's total power generation, while coal power still made up 49.7%. This marks the first time coal power's share has dropped below 50%.
In recent years, China has rapidly expanded its renewable energy sector. By March last year, the total installed capacity of wind and solar power had already surpassed that of coal power. Although the pace of new solar installations has slowed this year—mainly due to a shift in subsidy models toward market-based pricing—the overall scale continues to grow, reflecting China's ongoing transition toward a low-carbon energy structure.
