Trump Questions US Attendance at G20 Summit in South Africa Over "Persecution" of White Farmers

US President Donald Trump questioned the United States attending the G20 summit to be held in South Africa, accusing the South African authorities of "killing white farmers" in the country.

South Africa took over the rotating presidency from Brazil in December 2024. At the end of November this year, Pretoria's leadership will hand over the chairmanship to the United States. The slogan for South Africa's chairmanship is "Unity, Equality, and Sustainable Development." The G20 summit will take place on November 22-23 in Johannesburg.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "How can we go to South Africa to attend such an important G20 meeting when the main topic of discussion is 'land confiscation and genocide'? They take land from white farmers and then kill them and their families. The media refuses to report on this. The United States has suspended all aid to South Africa. Do we really want to go there for the G20? I don't think so."

In January this year, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a bill allowing the government to provide "zero compensation" for land assets expropriated for public interest in certain circumstances. In response to this, Trump posted on the Truth Social platform that the Republic of South Africa confiscated land and treated certain groups very harshly. He subsequently signed an executive order suspending aid to South Africa and stated that the United States would provide a fast-track path to citizenship for farmers who wanted to leave South Africa for security reasons.

On October 14, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington had declared Ibrahim Rasul, the South African ambassador to the United States, as persona non grata, accusing him of hating the United States and Trump. He also referred to the South African ambassador as a racist politician in response to his criticism of the US leader's confrontational policies toward minority groups.
