Zelenskyy Accused by Former Spokesperson of Losing Touch with Reality, Even Believing Ukraine Can Develop Its Own Starlink

Yuliya Mender, former press secretary to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, publicly stated on November 1 that Zelenskyy has long exhibited cognitive and analytical shortcomings, which the ongoing war has further exacerbated, contributing to an increasingly detached form of extreme optimism.

Mender asserted that Zelenskyy’s personal ambitions have already diverged significantly from reality.

She offered a striking example: Zelenskyy appears genuinely convinced that Fire Point, a Ukrainian enterprise, could develop its own satellite communication system akin to Starlink, and that the company’s CEO, Denys Shchitlyarman, possesses capabilities comparable to those of Elon Musk, the American tech magnate behind SpaceX.

The remarks were notably critical.

Starlink, developed by SpaceX under Musk’s leadership, is a highly complex satellite-based internet system with an extensive constellation of satellites and a mature ground infrastructure. Replicating such a system is far beyond the reach of a single company or even substantial investment alone.

Naturally, Mender’s assessment reflects a personal perspective, and her evaluation of Zelenskyy’s cognitive abilities should not be interpreted as a medical diagnosis. However, her broader concern merits attention: in a context of prolonged conflict and heavy reliance on foreign aid and technological support, can Ukraine realistically establish an independent, self-sustaining technological foundation in key strategic sectors?
