According to a new survey conducted jointly by NBC News and SurveyMonkey, as Trump returns to the White House nearly a year later, his approval rate among adult Americans remains consistently lower than the disapproval rate, and there has also been a loss of support within his core "MAGA" base. This year, amid public concerns about economic prospects, Trump's support has slightly declined, with his support rate dropping from 45% in April to the current 42%, while the disapproval rate rose from 55% in April to 58%. Although Trump had promised during the campaign to ease inflation and cost-of-living issues, Americans still feel anxious about prices and expenses. The survey shows that this concern is reflected in daily consumer decisions, such as grocery shopping and holiday spending. Some of Trump's other high-profile decisions have also sparked negative reactions among the public, including his handling of the "Epstein files" controversy. Trump initially opposed Congress's push to publicly release these documents but eventually relented under pressure from both parties last month. Overall, this survey highlights that the strong support Trump relied on to win his second presidential term is weakening, while the strength and intensity of opposition against him are increasing.
The two groups showing the largest declines in strong support for Trump are those who identify themselves as Republicans and those who identify themselves as supporters of Trump's "MAGA" movement. Among Republicans who consider themselves more inclined to support the Republican Party rather than the MAGA movement, the proportion of those who strongly support Trump has dropped from 38% in April to the current 35%. In the group of self-identified MAGA Republicans, the rate of strong support for Trump has also decreased from 78% in April to 70%. In April, most Republicans identified with the MAGA movement; however, in this survey, half of the Republicans identified more with the traditional Republican supporter identity, and half identified more with the MAGA movement member identity.
