Trump admits Republicans may lose in the mid-term elections

AFP reported on Sunday, December 14, that Trump admitted that although he believes he has achieved success in the economy in his nearly one year in office, the Republican Party may still suffer losses in the 2026 legislative mid-term elections. He made these remarks in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published late Saturday night.

In the interview with the media, Trump said, "I have built the greatest economy in history. But people need time to realize this."

He also said, "A large amount of money is flowing into our country and is currently being used to build various projects: car factories, artificial intelligence, and many other things. (However), I cannot tell you how this will ultimately translate into voters' feelings. All I can do is do my job well."

Since taking office on January 20th this year, Trump has consistently claimed that the U.S. economy is booming and has continuously blamed former President Biden for inflation.

He said in the interview, "I think by the time we really talk about the election, which will be in a few months, the price level will be in a good condition."

With almost a year until the 2026 mid-term elections, which will see all House seats and one-third of Senate seats up for re-election in early November.

In the Wall Street Journal interview, 79-year-old Trump seemed to be trying to find an exit, even stating that even presidents who have governed very successfully have faced setbacks in mid-term elections. He said, "We'll see what happens. We should win. But you know, from a statistical perspective, it's very difficult to win mid-term elections."

Additionally, he told political media Politico on Tuesday, December 16, that the performance of the world's largest economy could be given a "20 out of 25" (equivalent to A+++++).

Trump repeatedly emphasized that prices are falling, yet many Americans continue to complain about high living costs. A survey by the University of Chicago showed that only 31% of Americans are satisfied with Trump's economic policies.
