According to Reuters, on September 12 local time, the office of the Canadian Prime Minister issued a statement saying that during recent visits to China, Canadian officials held constructive talks with Chinese counterparts regarding the tariffs imposed by China on Canadian canola.

China is the world's largest importer of canola. Since August this year, China has imposed an initial tariff of 75.8% on canola imported from Canada, and the final ruling is expected to be made next year.

The Canadian delegation visited China from September 6 to 9. The delegation was led by the Premier of Saskatchewan, one of Canada's main grain-producing provinces, and included the Prime Minister's agricultural advisor and Member of Parliament Kody Blois.

The statement said that both sides discussed "multiple trade disputes, including the tariffs imposed on Canadian canola products" and had constructive dialogue. The statement also noted that this visit laid the foundation for further cooperation between the two sides and seeking practical solutions to address common concerns about trade issues.

Although no clear solution has been reached so far, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney previously stated that he would work with other senior ministers to actively resolve this trade dispute.

Canada is the world's largest exporter of canola, and its exports of canola products to China in 2024 were close to 5 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 3.63 billion US dollars).
