Reference News Network, January 20 report. According to Reuters, on January 19, Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popescu said that Moldova is going through the necessary procedures to complete the process of withdrawing from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The CIS was established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and is led by Russia.
The pro-EU Moldovan President Maia Sandu is leading efforts to have Moldova join the EU by 2030. She condemned Russia's "invasion" of Ukraine and accused the Kremlin of trying to overthrow her government.
Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe, located between Ukraine and the EU member state Romania. Since 2023, it has stopped participating in all CIS activities.
The report said that Popescu, on a radio program in Moldova, said: "I just want to say that we are confirming the revocation of three agreements we signed with the CIS." He referred to the agreements signed in 1991, which formed the foundation of the CIS.
He said: "Revoking these three agreements means that, legally, we are no longer a member of the CIS. In fact, we have been stopped participating in CIS activities for some time, but legally, we are still part of the CIS."
Vitaly Andrievsky, a political analyst, said that leaving the CIS does not mean that Moldova will terminate its relations with other former Soviet states. (Translated by Hu Xue)
