Forbes: Chip Controls Cannot Hinder the Advancement of China's Emerging AI Enterprises
According to a report from Forbes (Japanese edition) on July 17 (U.S. time): China's emerging frontier technology company Moonshot AI has unveiled "Kimi K3." The world's largest open-weight AI model (full model weights) with 2.8 trillion parameters will be officially released before July 27. The company positions this model as "a new frontier of intelligence directly challenging Anthropic and OpenAI."
The figure of 2.8 trillion parameters refers to the information that an AI model relies on when loading training data and generating responses. Notably, neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has disclosed the total number of parameters in their models.
Proprietary models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude keep their underlying systems confidential. In contrast, open-weight models like Kimi K3 and Meta's Llama allow developers to download, run, and modify the AI.
According to Moonshot AI, although the overall performance of the model still falls short of Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 or OpenAI's GPT 5.6 Sol, it demonstrates "cutting-edge-level" performance comparable to previous versions of GPT, Claude, and SpaceX.
It reportedly outperformed other AI models, including Grok, in testing.
In multiple benchmark tests covering coding and general agents, Kimi K3 "performs on par with Fable 5," Moonshot AI stated, noting it is "significantly superior" to Claude Opus 4.8, Sol, and GPT 5.5.
U.S. Bank analysts praised Moonshot AI's model, stating: "Despite certain constraints on accessing cutting-edge chips, Chinese AI companies have demonstrated significant progress by improving model training methods and designs."
Moonshot AI was founded in 2023 and is one of China's leading artificial intelligence development companies, backed by major IT giants such as Alibaba and Tencent.
