Reference News, August 4 report. According to AFP, on August 3, union members assembling Boeing aircraft in Missouri and Illinois will begin a strike starting from Monday (August 4). Their previous request for a new contract was again rejected.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) stated in a statement: "Approximately 3,200 senior technicians voted on August 3, 2025, to approve the abandonment of the contract with Boeing." The union stated: "The strike will begin at midnight on August 4."
The statement cited Tom Berlin, a union representative, as saying: "Members of IAM Local 837 have clearly stated that they deserve a contract that reflects their skills, loyalty, and major role in our nation's defense." Brian Bryant, president of IAM, said: "Our union is built on democracy, and our members have the right to demand a contract that matches their contributions."
Boeing's initial proposal was recently rejected, which mainly included a 20% wage increase over four years and additional vacation time. Boeing later stated that the latest proposal increased the wage increase to 40%. IAM had previously stated that if an agreement could not be reached within seven days, Local 837 would begin a strike.
Dane Gillian, the head of Boeing's St. Louis factory, responded: "We are disappointed that employees have rejected our offer." He said Boeing has prepared for the strike and has implemented an "emergency plan" to ensure that "non-striking employees can continue to assist" Boeing customers. (Translated by Lu Longjun)
