On August 1, Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, stated that according to the trade agreement with the United States, Malaysia will purchase 26 Boeing aircraft from the United States, totaling 19 billion USD.
The news portal Malay Mail quoted Tengku Zafrul Aziz in its report, saying: "We have undertaken several commercial obligations, one of which is purchasing Boeing aircraft."
Tengku Zafrul Aziz pointed out that the transaction will be carried out in two phases, with Kuala Lumpur purchasing 13 aircraft in each phase, each batch worth 9.5 billion USD.
Earlier on August 31, the United States announced the new final approved tariff rates after months of negotiations among multiple countries to reduce tariffs. The tariff rate for Malaysian goods was set at 19%.
The new U.S. tariff rates will take effect in a week, applying to goods imported into the United States for consumption purposes, but there are certain exemptions for goods already in transit.
In Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia are subject to a 19% tariff, Vietnam at 20%, Singapore at 10%, and Laos and Myanmar at 40%.
