Yomiuri Shimbun, April 17 report: A boy's body was discovered in a forest area in Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture. The police have arrested the boy's stepfather. Rumors circulating on Japanese social media claimed that the boy's stepfather is a Chinese citizen.
According to content shared on social media, a Taiwanese television station first disseminated the false information, which then rapidly spread across Japanese social platforms.
Kyoto Prefectural Police issued a clarification on the 17th, stating: "The claim that the suspect is Chinese is false."
On April 15, a video reporting on the incident was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by a Taiwan TV station, stating: "The stepfather from China may be involved." The video has been viewed over 8.6 million times.
The Taiwanese television station stated on its website on the 17th: "The information circulating on Japanese SNS is incorrect." The station's director confirmed via phone to the Yomiuri Shimbun: "We have indeed issued a clarification statement."
