U.S. Bipartisan Congressional Delegation to Visit China This Month, First Since 2019
A bipartisan group of U.S. House members will officially visit China this month, marking the first time since 2019 that a House delegation has visited China on an official basis.
Reuters cited NBC News reporting that this visit is organized by Adam Smith, a Washington state congressman, former chair of the House Armed Services Committee, and current top-ranking Democrat on the committee. Smith confirmed to the media that members from both parties on the military committee will accompany him, but the current chair, Republican Mike Rogers, will not participate.
The report noted that this visit takes place against the backdrop of continued tensions in U.S.-China relations over issues such as tariffs, technology, cybersecurity, TikTok ownership, and policies related to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Taiwan region.
Smith told NBC: "I think this visit is quite important; it reflects the willingness of the U.S. and China to open dialogue. Personally, I also believe it is necessary."
