Trump is delighted: Texas introduces a new district map that will allow the Republicans to gain five more seats in the U.S. Congress

The Texas legislature officially passed a new district map on Friday, which will allow the Republican Party to gain up to five additional seats in the U.S. Congress in the 2026 legislative elections. The French newspaper Le Figaro reported that the Texas district map will be revised, diluting Democratic votes, which is an unfair gerrymandering tactic.

President of the United States Trump had publicly pressured Texas Republican officials to redraw districts to maintain their current slim majority in the U.S. Congress.

Texas Republican Governor Abbott now must sign the new district map to make it law.

On Wednesday, Trump said on his "Truth Social" platform, "We are moving toward gaining five seats in Congress, which will save your rights, your freedom, and your country."

He added, "Texas will never let us down."

Previously, Democratic legislators who were in the minority in the Texas legislature fought hard against this bill. They fled to Chicago or New York in early August to avoid reaching the quorum for voting. Their departure caused the Republicans to be unable to organize a vote on the bill for over two weeks.

The Democratic party group in the Texas House strongly condemned the Republicans' attempt to "suppress minority voters through racist district maps," and they believe the new district map dilutes the votes of African American and Hispanic voters, who traditionally support the Democrats.

Currently, out of the 38 Texas representatives in Washington, 25 are Republicans. The White House hopes to have 30 Republicans next year. In response to Texas's move, California, led by Democrat Gavin Newsom, has taken measures to counteract and redrawd a district map favorable to the Democrats.
