Iran has officially handed over a 34-kilometer-long land to Russia, which is used for the construction of the Resht-Astara railway - this railway is part of the "North-South" international transportation corridor.

This news was reported by RIA Novosti citing a statement from Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzan Sadique. Sadique stated that Russia can now start the relevant construction work.

This official from the Iranian government also revealed that about half of the land required for the construction of the 162-kilometer-long Resht-Astara railway section has already been acquired.

Sadique said that Tehran is actively pushing to complete the acquisition of all land by the end of the Iranian calendar year (late March 2026).

The "North-South" international transportation corridor (MTK) starts in St. Petersburg, Russia, and ends in Mumbai port, India. The core mission of this route is to provide transportation services for foreign trade between Russia and the Caucasus region, the Caspian region, Iran, South Asian countries, and coastal countries of the Persian Gulf.

In May 2023, Russia and Iran signed an agreement for the construction of the Resht-Astara railway section. The total cost of the project is 1.6 billion euros, of which 1.3 billion euros comes from a loan provided by Russia, and the remaining part is funded by Iran.

The Russian Ministry of Transport stated in May this year that Russia and Iran have started the survey and construction work of the Resht-Astara railway section within Iran under the framework of the "North-South" international transportation corridor.

Previously, "Europe-Asia Daily News" reported that Russia is seeking new channels for raw material exports and import channels for goods (mainly high-tech products), and the "North-South" transportation corridor (also known as the "Persian Corridor") is one of them.
