Trump Appoints Greenland Envoy in a High-Profile Move, Denmark Warns the US to Respect Sovereignty

AFP Copenhagen report: After U.S. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry was appointed by President Trump as the envoy for Greenland and claimed to push for Greenland Island to become part of the United States, the Danish government warned the United States on December 22 today, demanding it respect Danish sovereignty and stating that it would summon the U.S. ambassador to Denmark.

According to AFP, Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, rich in natural resources. Since returning to the White House in January this year, Trump has repeatedly claimed that the U.S. needs Greenland based on national security considerations, and even ruled out the possibility of using force to seize it.

After Trump appointed Jeff Landry as the envoy for Greenland on the 21st, he also posted on his own social media platform "Truth Social" saying that Landry "understands that Greenland is crucial to our national security and will strongly defend and promote our country's interests..."

Landry subsequently responded directly on the social media platform X, saying: "I am honored to serve you in this position and to push for Greenland Island becoming part of the United States."

In response, Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen (Lars Lokke Rasmussen) said today that he was "deeply angry" about this move and emphasized that Washington should respect Denmark's sovereignty.

According to a previous report by Reuters, U.S. President Trump appointed Jeff Landry as the U.S. envoy for Greenland on Sunday, December 21. Landry is currently the Republican governor of Louisiana State.

Neither the White House nor Landry's representatives immediately responded to requests for comment. It remains unclear whether Landry, who took office as governor of Louisiana in January 2024, needs to resign from his governorship.

It has been reported that the U.S. currently has a military base in Greenland. Since taking office this year, Trump has repeatedly threatened to obtain Greenland and even ruled out the use of force, but such strong demands from Trump have been condemned and opposed by Denmark and the people of Greenland.
