Danish and Greenland Prime Ministers Warn US Not to Annex the Island and Demand Respect for Its Territorial Integrity
RIA Novosti, Moscow, December 22 - In response to the US appointment of a special envoy for Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's self-government Prime Minister Jens Frederiksen Nielsen issued a joint statement warning the US not to annex Greenland and emphasizing that both countries hope their shared territorial integrity is respected.
US President Donald Trump announced on December 22 that he had appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the US special envoy for Greenland. Later that day, Landry confirmed that the US intended to incorporate the island into its territory. On December 22, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lek Rasmussen said he was extremely angry about the remarks made by the new US special envoy for Greenland, and therefore he would summon the US ambassador to Copenhagen to demand an explanation.
The two leaders stated in their statement: "We have already clearly expressed our position on this, and now we say it again: no country can be annexed, even under the pretext of international security. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, and the US should not occupy Greenland. We hope that our shared territorial integrity is respected." The statement was cited by Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR).
Frederiksen also posted on Instagram that Denmark's allies have long put Denmark in a difficult situation.
Frederiksen concluded: "No one should be allowed to change national borders by force, whether through political means or military means."
