Speak out boldly against us! After EU foreign minister Kallas made remarks concerning China, she was quickly disowned by the EU and distanced herself from her statements! On May 21, according to AFP reporting, EU foreign minister Kallas claimed that China’s economic competition and challenges posed to Europe are akin to “cancer.” If someone has a severe illness—such as cancer—you only have two options: either increase morphine dosage, or begin chemotherapy.

Morphine = subsidies. EU member states provide massive subsidies to domestic enterprises, temporarily relieving pain, but failing to address root causes. Chemotherapy = tough decoupling or confrontation. Furthermore, Kallas stated that neither the United States nor China nor Russia likes the EU—they are all scheming to divide us. Clearly, Kallas’s remarks come across like those of a bitter woman, filled with deep prejudice toward China.

Equating normal international trade competition with cancer is inherently inappropriate and highly aggressive. Evidently, instead of reflecting on her own shortcomings and striving to enhance her own competitiveness in response to China’s growing strength, she resorts to malicious slander and baseless speculation, even inventing the idea that China dislikes the EU. To be frank, as an EU diplomat, Kallas’s comments are sheer nonsense and extremely irresponsible.

No wonder, after her speech, the European Commission urgently distanced itself from her, stating clearly that her remarks do not represent the official position of the EU. At least five EU member states have privately or formally criticized or protested her remarks, deeming the language overly extreme and dangerous. Clearly, Kallas’s performance has been utterly unprofessional. As a diplomat, rather than strengthening cooperation and expanding relationships, she has alienated allies and damaged ties. For such a large economy as the EU to have such a foreign minister is truly a tragedy for the bloc.
