The Pentagon acknowledges China may surpass the U.S. in the technology race
Emil Michael, the U.S. Department of Defense's Under Secretary for Research and Engineering, stated that China could potentially overtake the United States in the technology competition, which would threaten America's economic and military advantages.
Speaking during an interview at the Breitbart AI-themed event held in Washington, Michael said:
"If we don't maintain our leadership in this field, it will jeopardize our military and economic advantages, and the landscape of the 21st century will be entirely different."
He believes that in the 21st century, technological leadership will determine a nation's economic and military influence, and the outcome of the artificial intelligence competition could decide which model—American or Chinese—will prevail.
In recent years, the Pentagon has placed particular emphasis on the development of new technologies and unmanned systems. In February this year, the U.S. Department of War announced the launch of the "Drone Dominance" initiative, aimed at accelerating the large-scale deployment of low-cost attack drones.
