Foreign Media: What Are Europeans Most Proud Of?

According to data from the Pew Research Center, culture, people, and history are the three primary sources of national pride among European countries, though there are significant differences across nations.

Sweden stands out most prominently: 53% of respondents expressed pride in their country's political system, the highest single-figure percentage among all nations; Germany’s top source of pride is politics (36%), followed by economy (18%) and freedom (16%). Italians are most proud of culture (38%), while Greeks prioritize history (37%). In France and Spain, "people" are important sources of pride, accounting for 24% and 32% respectively. Dutch respondents place the greatest emphasis on freedom (24%), whereas Poles rank national identity first at 21%.

Notably, certain countries exhibit high levels of "negative sentiment"—respondents expressing disappointment or dissatisfaction with their own countries: the UK leads with 29%, surpassing any positive source; Spain follows with 25%, ranking second; Hungary comes in at 23%. The study indicates that this trend is closely linked to public trust in ruling parties, and growing political polarization has intensified the fragmentation of national identity—especially evident in the UK.

Southern European countries tend to draw pride more from history and culture, while Northern European nations show greater confidence in their political systems. Meanwhile, some Western European countries are currently facing a deep crisis in national identity.
