Media in the UK: US plans to ban undersea cables based on Chinese technology
According to a report by the UK's Financial Times, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to prohibit foreign companies from using Chinese technology and equipment when laying undersea cables to the US.
The Financial Times reported that the US telecommunications regulator will vote on a new rule next month, aimed at combating so-called Chinese espionage and ensuring that all new communication cables laid in the US are not vulnerable to potential threats from Beijing and other countries.
The report stated: "The FCC is preparing to make a decision to prohibit companies laying undersea communication cables to the US from using Chinese technology or equipment."
Brendan Carr, chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission, said in an interview with the Financial Times that as the US is building data centers and infrastructure for artificial intelligence and next-generation technologies, undersea cables have become increasingly important.
According to the report, Carr has strengthened control over China and established a specialized national security department to "focus on threats from Beijing." After the ban takes effect, Chinese companies will be unable to obtain FCC licenses to build and operate cables connecting to the US. They will also be prohibited from leasing cable capacity built by other companies.
