America: India will be a model for tariff negotiations with Asian countries!
On June 7th, the South Korean media "The Kookmin Ilbo" published an article stating that Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, said that India could become a model for tariff negotiations with Asian countries.
Recently, in an interview with Fox Business News, Hassett mentioned the progress of the tariff negotiations that have not yet reached subsequent agreements after the UK. He said, "Several negotiations are now very close to the finish line," and added, "I won't be surprised if an agreement is reached soon."
Regarding the negotiations with India, he stated, "It's something that negotiation representatives need to decide, but India has shown a very open attitude toward achieving significant progress, acknowledging that many measures taken in the past were detrimental to American workers."
He further added, "We hope India can reach the finish line in some way and set an example for other Asian countries." This means that Asian countries including South Korea should recognize that they, like India, have imposed tariffs and non-tariff barriers on the United States, and approach negotiations with an open attitude.
The Trump administration has been unable to reach subsequent agreements with other trading partners since signing the first comprehensive trade agreement with the UK last month. The progress of negotiations with India and Israel, which are considered closest to reaching an agreement, has not been specifically disclosed. Previously, President Trump said, "India is very willing to offer us a zero-tariff plan."
