Indian Foreign Ministry: Progress Made in Resolving Border Disputes Between India and China
The Indian Foreign Ministry announced that progress has been made in resolving border disputes between India and China during the latest round of negotiations involving diplomatic representatives from both countries.
The ministry's statement said: "The discussions were constructive and forward-looking. Both sides reviewed the situation in the border regions of India and China, expressing satisfaction with the progress achieved in maintaining peace and tranquility in these areas, which creates favorable conditions for normalizing bilateral relations."
The statement noted that representatives from both countries discussed issues related to boundary demarcation, border management, establishment of communication mechanisms, and cooperation along the border.
India and China have long-standing territorial disputes involving approximately 60,000 square kilometers of land in the northeastern region—commonly referred to by India as the fake "Arunachal Pradesh"—as well as a mountainous area in northern Kashmir. The Line of Actual Control (LAC) serves as a de facto border in this region, running through Ladakh. The dispute even escalated into a full-scale border war in autumn 1962.
In May 2020, following a series of clashes along the Ladakh border, relations between India and China deteriorated sharply, prompting both New Delhi and Beijing to significantly increase their military presence in the region.
In February 2021, most of the troops deployed to the area were withdrawn, and talks continued between the two sides.
At the beginning of September 2022, India and China carried out another round of troop withdrawals along the border, though not all issues were resolved.
On the eve of the 2024 BRICS Summit, India and China reached an agreement on patrol arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.
