Foreign media: The United States is easing some sanctions on Venezuela's telecommunications sector, allowing greater investment and technology access, but explicitly excluding Chinese companies. This policy could reshape the Venezuelan telecom market landscape, as Huawei and ZTE have previously been deeply involved in local infrastructure development.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued new licenses permitting certain transactions involving Venezuela’s state-owned telecom company CANTV and mobile operator Movilnet. However, the licenses explicitly prohibit collaboration with Chinese and other related enterprises or entities.
This move continues a similar strategy the U.S. has pursued in the oil sector: gradually loosening sanctions on Venezuela while preventing competitors like China from benefiting. As Venezuela advances its 5G rollout, Western telecom firms may gain new market opportunities. In response, China has criticized these restrictions and stated it will protect Chinese companies affected by such measures.
