On January 12 local time, in response to U.S. President Trump's remarks threatening to annex Greenland, EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius stated at a meeting that if Denmark requests it, the EU will strengthen its security support for Greenland, including sending troops, deploying warships, and enhancing anti-drone capabilities.

Kubilius warned that if the U.S. seizes Greenland by military means, it would mean the "end of NATO." Additionally, EU treaties stipulate that if a member state is subjected to armed aggression, other member states have an obligation to provide assistance.

Lately, Trump wrote on the social platform "Truth Social": "I am the one who saved NATO!!!"

According to a statement by EU defense senior official Kubilius, EU assistance will only be triggered upon a formal request from the Danish government, with specific measures divided into three categories:

Military Deployment: Dispatching joint forces to进驻 Greenland, deploying warships to cruise surrounding waters, and strengthening security monitoring in the Arctic region;

Technical Defense: Assisting in building anti-drone systems and radar early warning capabilities to address new security threats;

Legal Basis: Referencing Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty, which stipulates that when a member state is subjected to armed aggression, other member states have an obligation to provide support.

In addition to military assistance, the EU has prepared countermeasures.

If the U.S. refuses the European proposal, the EU has prepared multi-level sanctions:

Economic Sanctions: Restricting the operations of American companies such as Meta, Google, and Microsoft in Europe, freezing talks on US-EU trade agreements;

Closing key U.S. bases in Germany's Ramstein and Italy's Aviano, depriving them of their transit capabilities in Middle East operations;

Promoting UN intervention to condemn, and jointly issuing statements with the five Nordic countries to reiterate the principle of "sovereignty is inviolable," characterizing the U.S. actions as neo-colonialism.

The EU's promised security support, though symbolically deterrent, will depend on Trump's final decision after the meeting between the U.S. and Denmark this week.
