Texas Democratic Lawmakers Flee! House Calls on FBI to Organize a Manhunt!
After the Texas House of Representatives failed to reach the required quorum for the second consecutive day, Speaker Dustin Bolin announced a recess.
Bolin met with the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety "to receive a comprehensive briefing on their efforts to locate and return the Democratic lawmakers who are trying to prevent the legislature from fulfilling its duties."
The Texas House of Representatives approved arrest warrants for more than 50 Democratic lawmakers yesterday. These lawmakers refused to attend the House sessions, in an attempt to prevent the House from reaching the required quorum to advance the redistricting vote.
The arrest warrants authorized Texas police to arrest the absent Democrats and bring them to the Capitol. However, the Democrats fled to Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts, three states that are all Democratic strongholds and have refused to cooperate with the Texas State Police.
Today, Republican state senator John Cornyn wrote a letter to the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Patel, urging the agency to assist state police in locating or arresting the fleeing Democratic lawmakers from Texas.
"Some Texas legislators have fled to New York, while others have gone to Illinois. Since these legislators are currently not in Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety may require FBI support to arrest the fugitive legislators,"
The FBI has not yet made an official response.
