【Wen/Observer.com Chen Sijia】Recently, under the mediation of the United States, Russia and Ukraine held two rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Both sides called the talks "constructive," but no major breakthroughs were achieved. According to a report by Reuters on February 14, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy complained that the United States always asked Ukraine to make concessions rather than Russia, and he hoped the United States would listen to Ukraine's voice.

Zelenskyy said in a speech at the Munich Security Conference on the 14th that the United States, Russia, and Ukraine will hold a new round of talks in Geneva, Switzerland next week. "We sincerely hope that the trilateral talks are serious and substantive, and beneficial to all of us. But honestly, I sometimes feel that the parties are talking about completely different things."

Zelenskyy said that during the negotiations, he felt pressure from U.S. President Trump. He revealed: "The Americans often come back to the topic of concessions, and discuss Ukraine's concessions too frequently, not Russia's." He added that Europe had hardly participated in the negotiations, which he considered a "major mistake."

He emphasized that Ukraine is willing to discuss many issues, but Ukraine has already made concessions on multiple issues. "We have never heard of any compromise from the Russian side, and we want to hear their news."

Zelenskyy hopes the United States will continue to participate in the negotiations, but he insists that peace can only be built on the basis of security guarantees. He called on the United States to provide security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe: "We hope President Trump can hear our voices, and we also hope the U.S. Congress can hear our voices."

Reuters pointed out that Zelenskyy is worried that the upcoming 2026 U.S. midterm elections may shift Trump's government's focus.

In addition, Zelenskyy said he will continue to push for Ukraine's accession to the EU. He claimed that if no specific commitments are made, Russia will "do everything it can" to block Ukraine's EU membership, "whether they intervene directly or through some small countries." The Guardian believes this statement seems to be targeting Hungary's Prime Minister Orbán, who has close ties with Russia.

Zelenskyy has repeatedly mentioned the plan to join the EU in 2027. Last month, when he spoke with Austrian Chancellor Scholz, he said that Ukraine's EU membership would not only provide Ukraine with "core security guarantees," but also provide key security guarantees for the entire Europe, and he expects support from all parties for Ukraine's position. However, the Guardian mentioned that Zelenskyy's repeated demands for EU to clarify the timeline for Ukraine's accession have caused dissatisfaction among some EU leaders.

The United States, Russia, and Ukraine have already held two rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi, but there has been no progress on important issues such as ceasefire and territorial ownership. On the 13th, the spokesperson for the Russian President, Peskov, said that the next round of talks will be held in Geneva from the 17th to the 18th, and the Russian delegation will be led by the presidential assistant Mezhinsky.

Due to the lack of progress in the negotiations, Trump is gradually losing patience. According to a report by the Kyiv Independent, Trump criticized Zelenskyy for being "slow in action" during the negotiations on the 13th. He said, "Zelenskyy must act now. Russia wants to reach an agreement, Zelenskyy must act, otherwise he will miss a great opportunity."

The New York Times also cited information from Ukrainian officials on the 13th, stating that the Trump administration is increasing pressure on Ukraine to make concessions on the issue of the status of the Donbas region, in order to end the conflict before summer arrives.

Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn also revealed that during the talks held in Abu Dhabi in early February, the United States urged Ukraine to hold elections by May 15. The United States threatened that if Ukraine was unwilling to make concessions, it would withdraw from the negotiation process. Yurchyshyn said that due to the ongoing conflict, Ukraine could not push for an election in such a short time.

Facing the pressure from the United States, Zelenskyy insisted that a ceasefire should be achieved first. Zelenskyy said at the Munich Security Conference that if the United States could facilitate a ceasefire for two to three months, he would hold elections.

Regarding the progress of the Russia-Ukraine negotiations, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said on the 11th that Russia seeks dialogue on the Ukraine issue and is willing to explore solutions based on the consensus reached during the Alaska meeting between the Russian and U.S. presidents. He added that Russian President Putin has repeatedly emphasized that Russia tends to achieve the goal of "eliminating the military threat from Ukraine" through diplomatic channels.
