【Japan's Ministry of Defense: Chinese Naval Electronic Reconnaissance Vessel Transits the Ōsumi Strait】

According to information from Japan's Ministry of Defense's Joint Staff Headquarters on July 9, 2026: Around 9:00 a.m. on July 7, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) detected two Chinese naval vessels sailing northwestward approximately 80 kilometers east of Tanegashima (in Kagoshima Prefecture). These vessels were identified as an 815A-class electronic reconnaissance ship (hull number 795) and a 926-class long-range salvage and rescue ship (hull number 861).

Subsequent confirmation revealed that the two vessels proceeded westward through the Ōsumi Strait and entered the East China Sea.

The 815A-class electronic reconnaissance ship with hull number 795 is the same vessel previously observed on June 29 (Monday) sailing northeastward between Amami Oshima (Kagoshima Prefecture) and Yokotō Island (Kagoshima Prefecture).

Japan's Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces dispatched the Asagiri-class destroyer Asagiri (home port: Sasebo), assigned to the JMSDF's 7th Escort Group, to conduct surveillance and intelligence gathering operations against the Chinese vessels.
