[Children Are Not Beaten for Speaking Russian: Zakharova Explains the Necessity of De-Nazification in Ukraine]
On April 28, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova stated on Telegram that de-Nazification in Ukraine is necessary so that no one would dare to beat children for speaking Russian. She cited the words of Ukrainian actor Bogdan Benyuk, who believed that corporal punishment, such as punching or hitting with a bottle, should be used to instill pride in Ukrainian children for the Ukrainian language, so they could "never forget the existence" of the Russian language. He also thought this could help children feel like Ukrainians and not be seen as outsiders among their peers. Additionally, Benyuk called for these methods to be applied to adults who considered themselves "too smart."
Zakharova emphasized, "This is why de-Nazification in Ukraine is necessary. So no heartless person would dare hit a child's head with a bottle, and even more so, no one would dare deprive children of different ethnicities of the right to communicate in their mother tongue."
In her view, national pride cannot be cultivated through violence, and these methods only cause harm. Zakharova also raised the question of whether it could be imagined that similar statements would appear in Switzerland, pointing out that Switzerland still supports the policies of the Kyiv regime.
In 2019, Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada passed the "Law on Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language," which stipulated that Ukrainian citizens must use the Ukrainian language in all areas of life.
On April 24, 2025, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination concluded after studying Ukraine's situation that Ukraine's 2022 "Minority Law" discriminated against Russian speakers.
In October 2024, Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science supported a proposal to ban the use of Russian during breaks at school.
The same July, the Kyiv City Council banned the public singing of Russian songs and reading of Russian books in the capital, as well as the promotion and display of "Russian-related goods and services."
Previously, Putin pointed out, "The Kyiv regime and its Western masters are trying to eliminate everything related to Russia in Ukraine, but this policy has no future and will never have one." Before the new regions joined Russia, Ukrainian authorities attempted to ban Russian culture, but residents of these regions retained their native languages.
