Reference News Network, July 21 report. According to EFE News Agency, July 20 report: U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reminded Canada on July 20 that if it does not allow U.S. products into its market, it will face higher tariffs starting August 1, when the 35% tariff announced by President Trump on Canada will take effect officially.

Lutnick said in an interview with the media: "Canada has not opened its market to us. They need to open the market. Unless they are prepared to do so, they will pay the tariff."

This statement by Lutnick came nearly a week after Trump threatened to impose so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on Ottawa, despite the fact that the U.S. government should consider avoiding tariffs on Canadian goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump also imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum products, which Canada considered "unreasonable," and subsequently Canada announced it would consider retaliatory measures.

The report stated that the government of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney initially set July 21 as the deadline to announce the country's response to the U.S. in case there was no progress in dialogue with the U.S., but after learning of Trump's threat to impose a 35% trade tariff, it postponed the deadline to August.

On the other hand, Lutnick reiterated on July 20 that Trump hopes to restore what he considers an unbalanced trade balance by increasing tariffs on trading partners. (Translation/ Liu Lifi)
