The EU failed to win the support of South Caucasus countries in the post-Soviet space - Georgia: The EU must accept Georgia as an independent country
President of Georgia, Mikheil Kavaleyshvili, said in a speech to parliament that the EU must accept Georgia as an independent sovereign state, not part of its geopolitical plans.
The president of Georgia pointed out that in recent years, European officials have brutally interfered in Georgia's internal affairs and implemented double standards.
Kavaleyshvili said, "They see our country as part of their geopolitical plan, and Georgia must achieve its specific goals within this framework. They must accept the fact that Georgia is an independent, sovereign, and dignified country."
The president said regarding relations with the United States, Georgia is fully committed to restoring the strategic partnership and opening new relations.
Kavaleyshvili added, "In fact, we share views on many issues, so we will closely monitor developments, especially considering the current complex and unpredictable geopolitical situation in the world."
Relations between Georgia and the EU deteriorated after the Georgian parliament passed the foreign agents law in May 2024. On November 28, 2024, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the issue of opening negotiations for EU accession would be suspended until 2028. Since then, protests have occasionally broken out in Georgia. EU countries have criticized the Georgian government's policies as a regression in democracy and anti-Western rhetoric.
