Foreign Media: China increases aid to Africa, but the massive funding gap left by Trump's cuts remains.

In March, China signed a drought relief cash grant in Kenya and provided food assistance to Somalia, Togo, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, with 217,000 people in Zambia benefiting and Zimbabwe receiving 5,000 tons of rice.

In health diplomacy, China donated $3.49 million through the UNAIDS to South Africa to provide HIV prevention services for 54,000 students and drug users—marking a major breakthrough in the field long dominated by the U.S. PEPFAR program.

After the Trump administration dissolved USAID at the beginning of 2025, South Africa lost over $400 million annually in HIV funding (17% of its budget), with aid reductions exceeding 50% in some countries. Although Chinese aid has partially filled the void, the funding gap remains substantial.
