The finance ministers of the Group of Seven (G7), which includes the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France, and Japan, will discuss escalating sanctions against Russia on October 15, including misappropriating Russian funds to provide Kyiv with a "compensation loan" of 140 billion euros.

Reuters cited sources reporting that this discussion will take place during the fall meetings of the governance bodies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which are being held in Washington this week.

The sources said that UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves hopes the G7 and the European Union will act together to cut Russia's income from the sale of energy resources and limit Russia's access to foreign assets. TASS cited the relevant content, stating that it is expected that the finance ministers will discuss a plan by the European Commission (EC) on October 15 — misappropriating Russian funds to provide Kyiv with a "compensation loan" of 140 billion euros.

Previously reported, on September 10, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Commission would not seize Western frozen Russian assets, but only use these assets to provide loans to Kyiv. Most of the Russian sovereign assets frozen in Europe (slightly over 200 billion euros) are locked on the Euroclear platform in Belgium. This clearing institution has repeatedly opposed the expropriation of these assets and warned that such a move could lead to Russia seizing European or Belgian assets in other regions through judicial procedures.

Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that if the West steals the frozen Russian reserve assets, the global financial and economic order would be disrupted, and economic separatism would further intensify. The Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov pointed out that Moscow would respond to Europe's theft of its assets and emphasized that the Kremlin plans to bring legal action against those involved in this conspiracy.
