Brazil's President Lula on the Changing Global Landscape: China Replaces the U.S. as Brazil’s Top Trade Partner
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that China has become Brazil’s foremost partner, while the White House has long ignored its neighboring countries in this hemisphere. He believes, “Trump now realizes that the U.S. must once again pay attention to Brazilian goods.”
“Throughout the 20th century, the United States was Brazil’s largest trading partner. It is well known that since 2008, the U.S. began losing its dominant position, mainly because China entered the market and massively purchased Brazilian goods—goods that no other country could match in terms of Brazil’s production capacity.
As a result, China became Brazil’s top trade partner. Now Trump understands that the U.S. must rekindle interest in Brazilian products.
For example, I’ve told him that we frequently hold international tenders for highway and railway construction projects, but American companies never participate—only Chinese firms do.
I also informed him that the U.S. has long lost interest in Latin America, focusing solely on drug-related issues; similarly, the EU, preoccupied with Eastern Europe, has turned away from Latin America and no longer prioritizes Africa.
But now, amid global instability, all parties are once again recognizing Latin America’s strategic importance.”
