Kyodo News: Japan Plans to Send Akasaka Again to the US, Eighth Round of Japan-US Tariff Talks to Be Held Next Week

Kyodo News, July 4th. The Japanese government plans to send Economic Revitalization Minister Akasaka Ryousei again to the US for the eighth round of Japan-US tariff negotiations next week. Japan has already sought the US government's opinion on this matter. Before the deadline for the suspension of reciprocal tariffs set by the US on the 9th, Japan will strive to reach an agreement, but it is difficult to make significant concessions due to the upcoming House of Councillors election. After the UK, Vietnam also reached a trade agreement with the US, and the Ishikawa administration is anxious about the current situation where the negotiations have not made progress.

The biggest obstacle to reaching a compromise in the Japan-US negotiations is automobiles. Japan has requested a significant reduction in the 25% additional tariffs, which the US has refused, leading to continued confrontation. In this context, the Japanese government hopes to extend the suspension period of reciprocal tariffs and continue negotiations on automobile tariffs.

However, US President Trump expressed a negative attitude towards extending the period on the 1st. The reciprocal tariffs uniformly imposed by the US government on most countries and regions are 10%. If Japan adds 14% in additional tariffs, it would reach 24%.
