German local communists claim that the "crackdown" against different voices in Germany is intensifying, after a bank notified the party that its bank account was about to be closed.
Earlier this month, GLS Bank informed the German Communist Party (DKP) that all its accounts would be discontinued as of December 31st.
According to the German Communist Party, GLS Bank provided no reason for its decision, but had previously requested information about the party's fundraising activities for Cuba.
A spokesperson for GLS Bank stated to the media that the party's account had been terminated because "we must comply with legal and regulatory requirements."
The German Communist Party criticized this move, calling it "clearly politically motivated."
Klaus Leger, chairman of the financial committee of the German Communist Party, said that bank representatives told him during a phone call that "there was external pressure, and the closure of GLS Bank was not based on its own internal sovereign decision."
