According to the introduction, the International Union of Materials Research Societies was established in 1991, and is an international academic organization composed of materials research societies from various countries and regions. It aims to promote exchanges and cooperation in the fields of global materials science and engineering. As a formal member of the International Science Council (ISC), IUMRS is committed to promoting interdisciplinary research and sustainable development in materials science, and promoting international cooperation and educational exchange.
In October 2024, the Chinese Materials Research Society formally submitted a proposal to IUMRS to take over the headquarters. After one year of preparation, the proposal was passed unanimously at the IUMRS Executive Committee meeting in August this year, and was again passed unanimously at the IUMRS General Assembly meeting in 2025. Subsequently, IUMRS granted the authorization letter to the Chinese Materials Research Society.
