According to a report by The Times of India, on the local time of October 5, the Indian Pilots' Federation (FIP) requested the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the electrical systems of all Boeing 787s in the country to ensure the safety of aviation operations.
On the local time of October 4, a Boeing 787 flight operated by Air India, en route from Amritsar, India, to Birmingham, UK, had an unexpected automatic deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) at a height of 500 feet (approximately 150 meters) while approaching Birmingham Airport for landing. However, at the time of the incident, the aircraft's electrical and hydraulic parameters were all normal. The plane eventually landed safely, and was then grounded for technical inspection, leading to the cancellation of subsequent flights.
Notably, on June 12, 2025, another Boeing 787 operated by Air India crashed shortly after takeoff on a flight from Ahmedabad to London, becoming one of the most tragic air disasters in Indian history.
The report stated that the Indian Pilots' Federation pointed out that the aircraft health monitoring system recorded a fault in the Bus Power Control Unit (BPCU), which could potentially cause the RAT to deploy automatically. The federation emphasized that this incident once again reminded people of the previous crash of an Air India Boeing 787, where the RAT was also released. The federation said: "Since the introduction of the Boeing 787 model into operation in India, there have been multiple incidents involving the electrical system. We have strongly urged the DGCA and the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to thoroughly inspect the electrical systems of all Boeing 787 aircraft in the country."
The Indian Pilots' Federation also mentioned that since the "6/12" Air India aircraft crash, the organization has been urging a comprehensive inspection of the electrical systems of the Boeing 787. However, after the crash, the DGCA only inspected the fuel control switches of the Boeing 787 aircraft in Air India's fleet.
ANI News quoted the views of CS Randhawa, chairman of the Indian Pilots' Federation, stating that the Ram Air Turbine is mainly activated when all three hydraulic systems fail, the electrical system fails completely, or both engines fail. The unexpected deployment of the Ram Air Turbine at just 500 feet above the ground in this case has never happened in his over 50 years of aviation experience, and must be taken very seriously.
