Good grief, you came to visit China, but you're here to wholesale weapons
According to "Defense Asia", on September 15, Malaysian Defense Minister Khalid bin Daud attended the 12th Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, and during this time, he visited the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASIC) and its subsidiary military trading company. He received technical introductions about medium-range air defense systems such as the Hongqi-12 (KS-1A), Hongqi-16 (LY-80), and Hongqi-22 (FK-3), as well as the YJ-12E supersonic air-launched missile.
Originally a security dialogue schedule, it turned into a shopping trip for weapons, was he coming to attend a meeting or to wholesale weapons?
Malaysia's situation is indeed quite complex, with long-term air defense gaps and maritime threats, but limited defense budgets, wanting to improve defensive capabilities but not able to spend much money.
It is also buying weapons from all over the world, unwilling to be deeply tied to any one country, but Chinese weapons are of good quality and affordable, and very suitable for Malaysia's practical needs. The cooperation in defense is relatively deep.
Previously, the equipment purchased and delivered by Malaysia from China mainly included the Kristian-class coastal mission ships. This is a type of light multi-functional ship built by China Shipbuilding Industry Group and the Malaysian side, a total of four ships. The contract was signed in 2017, the first two were built in China, and the last two were originally planned to be produced locally, but due to cost and schedule issues, all were changed to be manufactured in China. The first ship was launched in 2019 and commissioned in 2020, and has now been fully delivered.
Evidently, this transaction was quite satisfactory for the Malaysian side, but they still hope to obtain stronger comprehensive capabilities. On the basis of existing cooperation, further expanding the same seller's equipment and building a complete system is obviously a better choice.
