U.S. Treasury Secretary: Supreme Court Tariff Ruling Undermines Trump's Key Influence
Sputnik News, Washington, February 21st - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that foreign tariffs were illegal severely undermined the American people and deprived President Trump of a key lever of influence.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the 20th that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump used to impose import tariffs, did not grant him the authority to do so. Trump called the ruling a disgrace and indicated he had a backup plan.
Bessent said on Fox News: "Today, the American people suffered a defeat because depriving President Trump of an important lever within the authority of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act is a major loss for the entire country."
Bessent believes that although the Supreme Court ruled that Trump had no authority to impose tariffs, foreign partners that have signed trade agreements with the United States should abide by the agreements already reached.
